Andrew Mack, 58, climbed an embankment behind a nearby 7-Eleven, shed his jacket and bolted across traffic on the airport entrance bridge after he and another man tried to rent a car with a stolen credit card, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said.
Officers caught up with Mack and arrested him on a roadway adjacent to an FAA control tower about 10 minutes later, he said.
Mack, of Miami Gardens, and Michael Hill, 48, of Lauderhill, FL tried to rent a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe using bogus documents around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Pentangelo said.
Once the card was declined, Mack used a second card that was approved, he said.
Employees stopped the Tahoe and directed both men back to the service counter to verify the address on the card, Pentangelo said.
When they couldn’t, Port Authority police were called.
Both took off through the Hertz lot on Lindbergh Road with police in pursuit, Pentangelo said.
Hill was arrested in the 7-Seven parking lot.
He and Mack were taken to the Essex County Jail on charges that include fraudulent use of credit cards, conspiracy and resisting arrest.
